Track season wraps up at Great West Conference Championships

The Seattle University track and field team completed its outdoor season at the Great West Conference Championships May 13-15. Performances by sophomore Tom Mezzera and senior Daniel Sullivan earned them Great West Conference titles.

The Redhawks men finished the competition in fourth place and the women took sixth at the competition in Yankton, S.D.

Senior Nicholas Alvarado took fifth place in the 10,000-meter run Thursday with a time of 32:01.43. Senior Rachel Yorkston placed sixth in her 10,000-meter run with a 38:38.01; her season best.

In the second day of competition, sophomore Zach Stanfield finished fourth in the preliminaries in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.98 and won his heat in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 21.97.

Performances by several runners were good enough to qualify them for Saturday's finals in their respective events. Mezzera won the preliminaries in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.28. Saturday, he won the finals with a time of 47.52; a new
school record.

Sullivan was the top qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.77. He improved his time in the finals Saturday, defeating the second place finisher by more than a second with a time of 53.40.

Sophomore Dan Auld qualified for finals in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.06. He finished sixth Saturday with a personal best of 1:54.26.

Freshman Kelton Sears, named Great West Conference Male Track & Field Athlete of the Week the day before the start of the competition, took fifth place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3.55.48.

Freshman Kaytie Bateman finished the heptathlon with a personal best and a new school record performance of 3,538 points. She took seventh place overall.

Senior Lindsay Currier finished in third place in the discus throw with a throw of 40.81 meters.

The women's 4x400-meter relay of Meegan Bergmann, Elena Collins, Clare Obradovich and Rachel Purcell broke the school record with a time of 3:55.44.

Collins also broke the school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.52.
