Oregon Province sexual abuse claims may reach 500

Number of victims alleging abuse exceeds expectations

Attorneys representing victims of sexual abuse in a case against the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus are finding they have more clients than they expected.

As a Nov. 30 deadline for filing claims against the Oregon Province approaches, some plaintiff's attorneys are estimating that the total between several firms will reach 500 claims alleging abuse by as many as 80 Jesuits.

"I honestly was stunned," said Patrick Wall, who works as an advocate with a law firm representing victims.

Walls' firm Manly Stewart is alone representing 198 victims, alleging abuse by 44 Jesuits, and expects to file more claims before the Nov. 30 deadline, which was set by a federal judge after the Oregon Province filed for bankruptcy in February.

The province—which includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Oregon—sought bankruptcy protection shortly after a lawsuit was filed in January on behalf of 43 victims, which was later expanded to 63 victims.

In a statement issued in February explaining the Oregon Province's decision to declare bankruptcy, the Very Rev. Patrick Lee, current provincial, said "approximately 200 additional claims were pending or threatened," an estimate that will fall significantly short with one law firm filing at least 198 claims.

According to the province, it has already settled more than 200 claims since 2001, paying more than $25 million of its own resources and more from its insurers.

Seattle University President Stephen Sundborg, S.J. was named a defendant in the lawsuit, which alleged he knew some Jesuits had sexually abused minors but didn't disclose that information when he was provincial, or leader, of the Oregon Province from 1990 to 1996. Sundborg denies all the allegations against him.

Lawyers and members of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, have been drawing media coverage as they've traveled within the province's states, urging victims to come forward before the deadline.

The majority of claims come from Alaska, where more than 170 Alaska Natives as of February have filed lawsuits against the Jesuits alleging sexual abuse. Most of the claims are from 40 to 60 years ago, according to the province. Since 1950, 3,000 Jesuits have served in the Oregon Province.

Still at issue in the Portland Federal Bankruptcy Court is whether Seattle University and other Jesuit educational institutions are part of the Oregon Province's assets. The court will rule on that after the Nov. 30 deadline, according to Wall.

Seattle University officials say the institution and others like it are financially independent and are not "owned, operated or controlled by the Oregon Province."

But plaintiff's attorneys are saying that at the time of much of the abuse and before 1972, the provincial exercised considerable control over the universities.

"If the board of the university decided to shut down the university," Wall said, "and sell all the assets, where would the money go? It would go to the society."

Yes, God is the final judge and His judgement overflows with compassion and mercy. He loves the sinner and the righteous. There is no hate in Him. He bestows upon those who know their need of Him, both the sinner and the righteous, the blessings of His kingdom. He leaves the 99 and searches out the solitary one who is lost. He asks us to extend to others the same mercy and forgiveness that He extends to us. Mercy, compassion and forgiveness is offered to all sinners. We have only to open ourselves to choose, accept and embrace with changed hearts and gratitude the mercy, compassion, forgiveness and love that He offers to us. This is, in part, what it means to be a loved sinner. That is what each of us is....a loved sinner.

God is the Final Judge. Of what? Human conduct, misconduct, and of evil. ALL the mass murderers by abortion and the active homosexual adulterer perverts WILL go to Hell, sans their TRUE repentance, unlike Ted Kennedy's scam letter to this Pope. He NEVER repented of his loveless, hate-filled and active promotion, for money, of "THE gravest evil", as both of our most recent Popes have rightly called it---the mass 1st degree murder of 53 MILLION baby boys and girls by abortion. Or truly repented of his reckless, drunken manslaughter of my beautiful, fine Catholic friend, and would-be wife, Mary Jo Kopechne. "Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin", God tells us in His Word. And that there is no redemption without true repentance. STOP sinning and you may be saved from Hell. Got it?

Lord God. Through your apostle Paul, you teach us that we see as though through a glass darkly. Through your prophet Isaiah, you teach us that your ways are above our ways, and that as high as the heavens are above the earth, so are your thoughts above our thoughts. Protect us, Lord, from those who claim to know your thoughts. Protect us, Lord from those who claim to see clearly. Protect us, Lord, from those who believe that they know the truth clearly. Protect us, Lord, from those who seek to use your Word to condemn and hate others. Protect us, Lord, from those who speak as though you hate the world and that you sent your Son, not to save the lost, but to condemn the world. These men confuse me. You, Lord, have brought to us a message of hope, love and forgiveness. Protect us, Lord, from those who bring despair, hate and condemnation. AMEN!

Peter on 11/13 is partly correct. The Catholic Church clergy IS, so very sadly, "dominated by homosexuals", just as the forner USCCB Preisident, Bishop Wilton Gregory, its 1st black President, rightly stated in public about 5 years ago. There is also still an abundance of deadly apostates and heretics in that same immoral clegy nowadays, and in the past. But the adulterous homosexual takeover and criminal rape spree began AFTER the "celibacy rule" was imposed, in direct defiance of God and his Word and intent ("It is not good that Man should live alone", so He created woman and marriage, as we read in Gen. 2) about 1000 years ago, and for just money and material "reasons"---to hold on to Church property ownership, and it has been "all downhill" ever since. This deadly and God-defying and just man-made "rule" MUST be reversed, immediately, as God requires. As He says, in I Timothy, NO unmarried man CAN BE an ordained Christian minister. EVERY such minister MUST be married, and already have chilldren, and MUST have already shown the brethern that he can maintain his own household and family rightly, before he is granted ANY ordained status or authority over any other families or other Christians. Period! When men defy God, the death and destruction ALWAYS follows. See Genesis 3 and 6, just for starters.

Leana seems to be a Universalist, which is a false doctrine and a core heresy condemned for all 2000 years by the Church. Without true repentance, there IS NO forgiveness. God loves the innocent and the righteous. He tells us that all through the Bible, and through His Church. God hates evil and evildoers, and commands us to both "expose and oppose" them and it. See Ephesians 5, and Matt. 18, etc., etc. Leana completely misreads and misunderstands Matt. 7 and John 8, as do so many ill-taught and ignorant people today. And of all the people who ever have lived, Jesus Himself, many times, and more times than anyone else, affirms the existence of Hell and its dangers. "Hell deniers" are therefore heretics, deny Christ and His work of our salvation [as God says in Scripture, "Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin"], and lead many astray. "Tough love" is the true love, Leana.

"So sick..." on 11/13 is wrong on almost every assertion. The MAIN problem with the Jesuits is that they are NOT Christians, and they now undermine the Faith, in direct opposition to God and to their original purpose and commission. THAT factual and multi-century reality has opened the door to their deeply-embedded, systemic, deadly, immoral, and sinful adulterous homosexual perversion. Homosexual (AND heterosexual, also) adultery is so destructive of marriage, the family, and therefore human society, that God commanded that all adulterers be executed, after a properly-conducted trial, of course, in Ancient Israel. God cares deeply about human decency and morality and life. Therefore He has commanded, since just after the Noahic Flood, and out of His great love for the innocent, that the death penalty always be applied, for ALL time, to 1st degree murderers. See Genesis 9:5-7., Deut. 17 and 19, and Lev. 20, and Romans 13, etc., etc. Unloving and uncaring fools are so defiant of God that they resist His laws and his so clear Word. As jesus himself tells us in John 3:19 et ff., "this then is the verdict on mankind: men hate the Light [Himself] and love the darkness, because their deeds are evil." Shortly thereafter, and as you can read also in Matt. 23, those same deadly "religious leaders" falsely "tried" Him, before the Sanhedrin, in the middle of the night [in the darkness], and violated EVERY one of the 33 procedural rules so as to and wrongly "convict" Him with a flood of false witnesses, and then emanded that Rome crucify him to temporal death. "Give us Barabas" for release, not death, they shouted, and invoked the curse of death upon themselves and their sons to the 3rd and 4th generation as they responded to pilate concerning the fate of Jesus then in his hands, "Crucify Him!!!" The Jesuits are now no better, consumed with homosexual adultery, criminal rapes of young Catholic men, undermining the faith, and even ADVOCATING "the gravest evil", abortion, as that dead-Jesuit NON-Christian/NON-Catholic, God-hating fool "Fr." Robert Drinan did so viciously for all of his adult years and as a US Congressman from deadly MA, and as the Dean of that corrupt and faithless Boston College "Law" School, and as the lying "mentor" to all these pro-abortion "Catholic" politicians, 98% of whom are Democrats, such as Teddy Kennedy and Mario Cuomo, Barbara Mikulski, et al . I met drinan at Ethel Kennedy's home on 6/6/1993, and we talked at some length. I also knew Cuomo, and ran twice against US Senator Mikulski. ALL of them are liars and fraud artists by claiming still to be Catholics---to get the gullible "Catholic vote". In fact they are ALL self-excommunicated by the automatic operation of Canon 915 of the Church, so they LIE. And as Jesus himself tells us in Matthew, "Satan is a liar, the father of lies, and a murderer." Lying leads directly to murder and death---see Genesis 3 and 4. The Jesuits are therefore Satanic and deadly, and MUST be re-disestablished, for many of the very same reasons for which they were previously disestablished by the Pope and Christ's Church about 300 years ago. They do NOT learn, and are still utterly corrupt. Good riddance.

Many comments on this site miss the point entirely. Priests who were in positions of power and who were trusted by parents of the children, simply took advantage of that power and the trust people (often mistakenly) place in them to rape children. That is a sin, yes which can be forgiven by God, if there is a sincere request, but it is also a crime here in this country. Those priests like all pedophiles must be jailed after the first offense and action must be taken by their superiors in religious orders and dioceses, etc. to protect the public from them. This is not a church issue. It is a legal issue. The Jesuits should sever their relationships with "Jesuit Institutions" or those institutions should be sold for the financial benefits of the victims.

Brothers, brothers! In our prayer should we not seek to embrace one another with the same love and compassion that God in Jesus has embraced us? Are we not all loved sinners? Did Jesus not give His life so that all of us can find the Father's mercy, compassion and love in Him? Does He not leave the 99 to seek the one solitary sinner who is lost? Did He not forgive, love and offer compassion to the woman caught in adultery? Does He not continue to offer forgiveness, love and compassion to all, in our own day, who are caught up in sinful ways, whatever those ways may be? Does He not ask us to continue His mission in the world by doing the same as He did? Can we not see ourselves in the sinner? We should pray very very hard that His love will penetrate and change the hearts of all who have strayed. His all-embracing mercy and compassion is there for all who wish to receive it. It is there for me, for you, and for all whose lives are caught up in sin. Why is this so difficult to understand and to accept. There is nothing, I repeat, nothing, in what I have said that is contrary to any Catholic doctrine. What I have offered is, in fact, the heart of all Roman Catholic teaching, that He came into the world to save us, ALL of us. I will repeat something that I said previously. As John Paul II said, God's answer to evil is divine mercy. Why is this so difficult for you? Have you not experienced this mercy, compassion and forgiveness in your own life? Am I sharing my Catholic faith with a brick wall?

Leana, you have responded to no point made, or question asked about, your denominational affilliation. And you just use character assassination here. Do you assert that you are a Catholic? Or are you a Protestant or an aethist using this site? You are committing calumny and are revealing your lack of ability to distinguish between good and evil in your many comments and assertions here. So we must ask you: do you support 1st degree mass murder for money by abortion, which the Church has ALWAYS condemned as "the gravest evil", contrary to the false assertions of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, (and Gov. Gregoire and Sen. Patty Murray and Sen. Maria Cantwell, et al.) who was long-ago self-excommunicated by the automatic operation of Canon 915 of the Church (just as EVERY "public person" who advocates abortion is also, including Microsoft and NBC's anchor at MSNBC, Chris Matthews, and his wife) , and therefore commits deadly fraud by asserting that she is still a Catholic? Pelosi was a greeter and secretary for former US Senator Daniel Brewster of Maryland in her youth, and apparently believed the false advice of that deadly Jesuit fool, "Fr." Robert Drinan, the former Dean of the Jesuit BC Law School in Massachusetts, when he was a Congressman promoting lies to all the Catholic politicians that they could and should defy God and His Church and advocate abortion, in return for millions of dollars from the $3 billion/year abortion big business. Like SO many millions of would-be faithful Catholics, over several decades, and even centuries, that Jesuit was one of thousands who have perverted and subverted the faith---for the hundreds of years since they chose freely to serve Mammon (the pagan god of materialism) instead of God. Google" the Jesuits, and you will see their sordid and deadly and sexually-perverted history. Usually, people with your views DO support the deadly lie of the totally non-existent " woman's 'right' to choose"---to wrongfully, sinfully and criminally take, or procure the taking of, the life of her own innocent unborn child, which are the words which the abortionists NEVER utter. The truth 9of God and His Church) is that once a woman IS pregnant, she has a God-given and required DUTY to care diligently for that child, to carry that child to term, and to bear/deliver him or her, regardless of how or why she has become pregnant. To take that life in her womb is evil, and it is a homicide, in whatever degree may be appropriate in her individual case. Do you understand these truths and facts, Leana? We all hope so.

Really, dear brothers. This all seem way over the top to me. Why are you so motivated the hate and slander, presumably in the name of the Catholic church, and in the name of God? I think Satan is sifting you, and he appears to be winning. We should pray for one another, and for our brothers, the Jesuits. We should want their salvation as much or even more than we want our own. Wouldn't that be an appropriate imitation of Jesus? Should we not seek to love and embrace the sinner as much as He has loved and embraced us (who are sinners)? Where does casting stones get anyone? Seems like we just end up with a lot of broken windows.

Leana seems to be more of a UMC or UCC or ELCA member, not a Catholic. She misquotes Scripture the very same way that those 3 apostate Protestant denominations' nowadays lie and blather about "not judging" the misconduct of evildoing by others and which God ACTUALLY commands us TO do. See Ephesians 5, Romans 13, Romans 1, Matt 7, Matt 10, etc., etc., etc., let alone Deut. 17 and 19 and 28, etc., etc. And also Genesis 9:5-7 where God both establishes and COMMANDS that we carry out HIS death penalty---because of His great LOVE for all INNOCENT people, especially God's love-filled babies still in their mother's womb, whom the Jesusits have come to hate and not love and care about and protect as god and His church commands them TO do, as they also have cared not about the young Catholic men whom they have criminally, homosexually, and adulterously raped for hundreds of years, not "just" recently, because so many of them hate God, and "go their OWN way", in their direct, arrogant, loveless, and stupid defiance of God (see Judges 17 and 19, and Proverbs 3:7) .

Is Leana a Catholic? A Christian? IF so, she clearly illustrates the grave ignorance of "Catholics" today---most of whom attended the pagan, secularized, Godless, immoral, Pied Piper, and government monopoly so-called "public" schools. She does not understand the Faith, and is totally reversed again. THE great hope of the Christian is that perfect justice WILL be done, by God, in the End. That also means the condemnation of the wicked to Hell for eternity. God is the Righteous Judge, as well as Love Personified. Jesus spoke more often, just in the 4 Gospels alone, than ANY person in all history of the actual existence of Hell. Without Hell there is no reson for His perfect sacrifice. If "everybody goes to Heaven, regardless of their deeds" [this is the prime heresy] who needs a Savoir? Why else did He come, but to save from the fires of Hell the righteous who put their faith in Him, rather than in Satan---as do so many Jesuits and other heretics like them, and whom they have cruelly and deliberately subverted and misled (see Matt. 23 about evil "religious leaders", whom Jesus STILL condemns to spiritual and physical death)? The Ancient righteous were saved before Jesus came to Earth in human Time. God directly, and through His many human agents over time---Moses, Joshua, King David, the King of Assyria, Gideon, slew their evil enemies by the thousands and even by the billions (see Genesis 6) . He HATES the evildoers---see John 3:19 et ff., on that, directly from the mouth of Jesus, etc., etc. And there is MUCH more!

Well...what can one say. Like John Paul II said, the ultimate victory overy evil is divine mercy. God even goes so far as to "forget" our sins. I prefer to error on the side of mercy and compassion. Judgemental condemnation and self righteousness will get us (the Church) nowhere. I think, too, some fact-checking is in order. Concerning the media reports, they are likely inflated and have provided the most negative, sensational and provocative view possible. That is what sells papers and keeps ratings at a profitable (money!) level. And consider, too, that the attornies for the plantiffs are very motivated (money!) to stir the flames of anti-Jesuit public opinion. It can only help them make more money. A man whom I consider wise once told me, "You should believe only half of what you see and none of what you hear [or read]." Let's pray hard for the Jesuits, for ourselves and for the world (and for those who love to hate and slander Jesuits), just like Jesus did for Peter when Satan was given his leave to sift the disciples like wheat. God, I believe, would have it no other way. "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

It is inconceivable to me that anyone would continue to contribute financially to Seattle University and many other "Jesuit" institutions which allow the Jesuit priests to remain in control of those institutions. The leadership of the Jesuits allowed child molesters to continue going out into the community and cause their particular form of pain on individuals and families. They put priests in close proximity to young (no longer children, but quite young) men in dormitories where they were able to prey on the residents. They put other Jesuits in positions where they could sexually harass employees of the University. The Jesuit leadership certainly had the ability to remove priests from duties which permitted them to carry on these activities or to remove them entirely from the University environment. Even if the leadership in the Jesuit community is determined to be not guilty in the eyes of the law, and even if they could not reveal what was stated to them in confidence, and even if it is determined that the University is separate from the Jesuit Order legally, any number of steps could have and should have been taken to protect people from those in its ranks who used their positions of power for their own pleasure. I was told once by a former priest (non-Jesuit), presumably as some kind of excuse, referring to an indicted child molester priest friend of his "who knows what goes on in the minds of men." I find such comments totally inexcusable as I do the actions of the Jesuit leadership at Seattle University. For its own good, the school should find new non-Jesuit leadership.

Leana on 11/17 is totally reversed and wrong. Those who cried "Crucify Him" at Jesus phony trial before Pilate after His totally corrupt trial by the 'religious' murderers before the Sanhedrin in the middle of the night, which violated EVERY one of the 33 rules of God's required trial procedures in/for Ancient Israel, were God-hating and evil men, and murderers. Those of us faithful Catholic Christians who object to the mass homosexual adulterous rapes of tens of thousands of young Catholic men for 50+ years, especially by the utterly apostate, heretical, and homosexually-dominated and corrupt and largely pro-abortion [like the grossly evil former Jesuit BC Law School Dean and Cong. Robert Drinan, who promoted the mass murder of now 53 million innocent boys and girls since Roe, which he virulently and lovelessly advocated and taught to all the pro-abortion "Catholic" politicians like Teddy Kennedy and Mario Cuomo, et al.] Jesuits, who should be re-disestablished, are the righteous. And we not only have a right, but a duty, commanded by God (she has probably not even read Ephesians 5 where God explicitly commands that we both "expose and oppose evil", etc.) to speak out---and to judge them. Jesus says, "By their fruits shall you know them." . Our right to demand that the monastic evils be rooted out are also found in the Rule of St. Benedict, going back over 1200 years. She seemingly cannot distinguish between good and evil, which God also commands us TO do and to learn to be able to do. See Proverbs 1 and 2, etc. .

Everyone needs our prayers, compassion and support, both perpetrators of abuse and their victims. But too many people are using this issue to grind their axes. Some would make it sound as though the entire Jesuit order is corrupt, when only about 1/3rd of 1 percent of Jesuits in the Oregon Province (about one in every 300) have been accused, and some of the allegations are not credible. It is likely and should be expected that many of the so-called 500 or so expected claims are bogus and the claimants are probably looking for money, not justice or healing. Some of these posts seem to have been made by people who are love to hate Jesuits. It is amazing that folks can claim some strange kind of Christian or Catholic orthdoxy on the one hand, but spew hate and malicious slander on the other. It is evil.

Footsoldiers of the Pope became footstools for Satan. I would have no problem with His Holiness shutting them down for a few years--no more noviates until a complete housecleaning is done. Their famous name and famous reputation should not save them from a wholesale investigation and reorganization. There is always work for an order like theirs, one that attracts intellectuals for a teaching vocation, but right now there is not much going for them. Unless the pope is finding similar amounts of buggery and deception in other orders, then only the sheer magnitude of closing down an order must be his pastoral challenge. I don't think letting them die on the vine is an option, they are too vocal and too media savvy. The rump (pun intended) of buggerers would form the intellectual nucleus of a future schismatic, "progressive" Catholic Church. "Better to have your enemies inside the tent pissing out, then outside pissing in'....this might be His Holiness' pastoral calculus.

As homosexuality became more prevalent and accepted in society we got many latent or closeted homosexuals going to hide in our priesthood. Combine that with liberal seminary admissions boards in the late sixties, seventies and up to the mid eighties and we have a real problem. I was taught by good and holy Jesuits at the University of Scranton, but they no longer dominated each liberal arts faculty department. By the time I left, there might only be one or two Jesuit professors per department and not every dorm had one living it as a counselor.
Lastly, I feel some Jesuits began to read their own press clippings, starting to think "S.J." is automatic smarts.
